The Prison & Detention Industrial Complex and Catholic Social Teaching

Karen Ross, PhD, Director of Pathways at the Catholic Theological Union, shared this presentation at a CSPL Membership Meeting.

The term Prison Industrial Complex was first coined by scholar and activist Angela Davis to describe the ways in which the overlapping interests of government and industry use surveillance, policing, and imprisonment as solutions to economic, social, and political problems.

This PDF explains what the Prison Industrial Complex is, how it works in the United States, and how we as people of faith and committed to social justice should respond.
